Message from the Pastor
Our congregation and the Overbrook congregation have voted overwhelmingly to develop a formal merger plan. Now that we have taken that step, the obvious question is: “What happens next?”
The next step in our process will be to take the “Plan of Union” and to break it down into manageable pieces. Our Session and the Overbrook Session will be meeting together in the near future to do just that. If things work out as expected we will then offer the opportunity for interested persons from both congregations to work on various aspects of the plan. One group of people, for example, will probably have to figure out a process for picking a name for the new congregation. Another group of people will have to make recommendations about what the organizational structure of the new church will be (how many elders will it have, for example). Another group will have to figure out how space in the present Overbrook building will be utilized. A different group will have to make recommendations concerning the memorials that have been given to the churches over the years
There are some aspects of the Plan of Union that will need to be developed in consultation with experts. Matters pertaining to the endowments of both churches, matters pertaining to real estate and matters concerning the corporate status of the church will certainly require legal advice. We will also be seeking the advice and guidance of the Presbytery of the James as we put the Plan of Union together. We want to be as certain as we can be that the plan we put together will be properly written, legally correct, and ecclesiastically “in order”.
One important part of our planning process will be to envision together what the mission and ministry of the new congregation will be. There are certainly elements of ministry and important missions in both congregations that will continue. Nevertheless, this merger process is also a wonderful opportunity to consider new forms of service and outreach as well.
As the various groups work on different aspects of the Plan of Union they will formulate recommendations that will come back to the Sessions of both churches. If those recommendations are adopted by both Sessions, they will then be reported to the congregation and included in the proposed Plan of Union. The Plan of Union, when complete, will then be presented to both congregations for their consideration. If the plan is approved by both congregations and by the Presbytery of the James, then it will then become effective.
The important thing to remember as we begin to put a Plan of Union together is that we are talking about creating a brand new congregation. The merged congregation we are striving to create will have a new name, a new sense of purpose, and a new vision for the future. Pastor Dick

POJ-PW Stamp Mission
As of Sep 17, stamp sales for POJ were $4,933.51. Please continue to collect commemorative stamps form the US and also any foreign stamps. As always, funds go to the mission in the Congo. Scholarships were given to people from the mission entering seminary in Belgium. Bibles and hymnals were given to rural evangelists in that area. Part of the money goes to the Presbyterian printing Press in Kasai, Congo. POJ thanks all who give the stamps and to those who prepare the stamps. The stamp sales do improve the lives of those who live in the Congo. Please continue to pray for these people.

When It Looks Like I Have Failed
Lord, are you trying to tell me something?
For Failure does not mean I’m a failure;
It does mean I have not yet succeeded.
Failure does not mean I have accomplished nothing;
It does mean I have learned something.
Failure does not mean I have been a fool;
It does mean I had enough faith to experiment.
Failure does not mean I’ve been disgraced;
It does mean I dared to try.
Failure does not mean I don’t have it;
It does mean I have to do something in a different way.
Failure does not mean that I am inferior;
It does mean that I am not perfect.
Failure does not mean that I have wasted my life;
It does mean that I have an excuse to start over.
Failure does not mean that I should give up;
It does mean that I must try harder.
Failure does not mean that I will never make it;
It does mean that I need more patience.
Failure does not mean you have abandoned me;
It does mean you must have a better idea. AMEN

Discouragement
Discouragement is dissatisfaction with the past, distaste for the present, and distrust of the future. It is ingratitude for the blessings of yesterday, indifference to the opportunities of today, and insecurity regarding strength for tomorrow. It is unawareness of the presence of beauty, unconcern for the needs of our fellow man, and unbelief in the promises of old. It is impatience with time, immaturity of thought, and impoliteness to God.

A “Hearty Lesson"
Children have an amazing ability to teach adults practical lessons about living. Such an incident occurred with my son on one summer vacation.
The first couple of days, Matt seemed to misbehave constantly, and I seemed to be constantly rebuking and correcting him. No son of mine was going to act that way, and I made that clear to him in no uncertain terms. One day later that week, Matt tried especially hard to live up to his dad’s standards. In fact, he hadn’t done a single thing that called for correcting.
After he said his prayers and jumped into bed, Matt’s bottom lip began to quiver. “What’s the matter, buddy?” I asked. Barely able to speak, Matt looked at me with his glassy eyes and asked, “Daddy, haven’t I been a good boy today?”
Those words cut through my parental arrogance like a knife. I had been quick to criticize and correct his misbehavior but failed to mention my pleasure with his attempt to be a good boy. My taught me never to put my children to bed without a word of appreciation and encouragement.
Criticism comes without thought, but smart people will think before they speak. Glenn Van Ekeren
